Chronology
Followed by Extreme Ghostbusters

The Real Ghostbusters is an American animated TV show. It is based on the popular 1984 movie Ghostbusters. The show aired from 1986 to 1991. It was made by companies like DiC Entertainment. The name "The Real" was added to the title. This was to avoid confusion with another show called Ghost Busters.

This series continues the exciting adventures of a team. They are paranormal investigators. The team includes Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, and Dr. Ray Stantz. Their helpful secretary is Janine Melnitz. They also have a friendly ghost mascot named Slimer.

Meet the Characters

The voices for the characters changed over the years. Here are the main voice actors:

Where the Show Aired

The show first aired on ABC. This was for most of its run. The third season also aired in syndication. Syndication means it was shown on different TV stations at the same time.

Later, you could watch reruns of the show. They appeared on channels like USA Network and Fox Family. It also aired on Nickelodeon from 1996 to 1999. In 2002, it was shown on Cartoon Network.

Other Ghostbusters Shows

Slimer!

In 1988, The Real Ghostbusters got a longer time slot. It became an hour-long show. This new format included a sub-series called Slimer!. This part of the show had short animated stories. They focused on the character Slimer.

The Slimer! segments added new characters. These included friends of Slimer. There was also Professor Norman Dweeb. He was a mad scientist who wanted to catch Slimer. He had a poodle named Elizabeth. Professor Dweeb sometimes appeared in the main Real Ghostbusters show too.

Extreme Ghostbusters

A new cartoon called Extreme Ghostbusters came out in 1997. It was a sequel to The Real Ghostbusters. This show started several years after the first one ended. The original Ghostbusters team had mostly stopped working. This was because there were not many ghosts around.

Only Egon remained at the firehouse. He stayed with Slimer to look after the ghost containment system. He also taught classes at a local university. When new ghost problems started in New York, Egon formed a new team. He recruited four of his university students. Janine also returned to help manage the office.

The original Ghostbusters came back for the show's finale. They celebrated Egon's 40th birthday. They worked with the new team to solve one last big case.
