Orbicular Diorite

This site contains a very unusual type of rock called "orbicular diorite." It's an igneous rock, which means it formed from cooled lava or magma, and it has special minerals like hornblende and feldspar.

Piedmont Beech Natural Area

The Piedmont Beech Natural Area is one of the best examples of a "mixed mesophytic forest" in the eastern Piedmont region of North Carolina. This type of forest has a wide variety of trees and plants that thrive in a moist, balanced environment. It's located inside William B. Umstead State Park.

Smith Island
