The main heroes of One Piece are the members of the Straw Hat Pirates. This crew of ten pirates is led by their captain, Monkey D. Luffy. The crew grows as Luffy finds new friends to join him on his adventures.

After Usopp joins, they get their first ship, the Going Merry. Later, this ship is replaced by a bigger, stronger one called the Thousand Sunny. Their shipwright, Franky, built it. The Straw Hats even gain a large group of allies called the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. This fleet has 5,640 pirates from seven different crews! Luffy doesn't want to be a fleet commander, but he organizes them so they can help each other if anyone is in trouble.

After defeating two powerful pirate leaders, Kaido and Big Mom, the Straw Hat Pirates are recognized as a very important crew. Luffy is now known as one of the Four Emperors, the most powerful pirates in the world. The other nine members are his Senior Officers.

Monkey D. Luffy: The Captain

Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is the main character of the One Piece story. When he was seven, he admired the pirates led by "Red Haired" Shanks. He accidentally ate their treasure, the Gum-Gum Fruit. This special fruit made his body stretchy like rubber!

Luffy's brave actions once put him in danger. Shanks saved him, but lost an arm. After that, Luffy decided to start his own pirate crew. He vowed to become the King of the Pirates. Luffy was then raised by Curly Dadan and her mountain bandits. There, he became sworn brothers with Ace and Sabo.

Ten years later, Luffy started his crew, still wearing Shanks' straw hat. He quickly became famous as "Straw Hat" Luffy. Later, after a big battle where he couldn't save Ace, he trained for two years. He learned to use a special power called Haki and improved his rubber abilities. He is now one of the "The Worst Generation" of pirates. After defeating Kaido and Big Mom, he became one of the newest Four Emperors. Luffy can use all types of Haki. During his fight with Kaido, his Devil Fruit power awakened. It was revealed to be the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika.

Luffy's voice actor in the anime is Mayumi Tanaka. In the Funimation English version, he is voiced by Colleen Clinkenbeard. Iñaki Godoy plays Luffy in the live-action show.

Zoro traveled as a bounty hunter, known as "Pirate Hunter" Zoro. He met Luffy and became his first crewmate. Zoro agreed to join Luffy, but made it clear he would leave if Luffy ever stopped him from achieving his dream. However, Zoro grew to care deeply for his crew. He even trained with Mihawk to become stronger for them. Zoro can use all three types of Haki. He is famous for always getting lost, no matter where he goes!

Nami, who was a child but already a great mapmaker, joined Arlong's crew. She hoped to buy her village's freedom one day.

Nami grew up hating pirates, even though she worked for Arlong. She became an excellent burglar and navigator. She has an amazing ability to predict the weather. When Arlong betrayed her, Luffy and the Straw Hats defeated him. Nami then joined the Straw Hats to follow her dream of drawing a complete map of the world. She became known as "Cat Burglar" Nami.

Usopp: The Sniper

When Usopp was young, his father, Yasopp, left to join the Red-Haired Pirates. Usopp's mother, Bachina, became ill. Usopp started telling tall tales, hoping his father would return. Even after his mother passed away, Usopp didn't blame his father. Despite being a bit of a coward, he wants to become a brave pirate.

Usopp is easy to spot because of his long nose, which is a nod to how much he tends to lie. He is a talented inventor, painter, and sculptor. In fights, he uses slingshots to fire different types of ammo with great accuracy. He also uses his lies and other inventions in a unique fighting style. To help the Straw Hats save Nico Robin, he became famous as "Sogeking, the King of Snipers." He wears a golden mask and cape as this hero. Later, after helping free Dressrosa, he became known as "God" Usopp.

In the anime, his voice actor is Kappei Yamaguchi. Sonny Strait voices him in the Funimation English version. Jacob Romero Gibson plays Usopp in the live-action show.

Sanji: The Cook

Vinsmoke Sanji was born a prince of the Germa Kingdom. His genetically enhanced siblings often made fun of him. His father, Judge, even locked him away. With help from his sister Reiju, he escaped.

When Sanji was nine, he was an apprentice cook on a ship. Pirates attacked, led by "Red Foot" Zeff. Sanji was swept into the sea by a huge wave. Zeff jumped in to save him because they both dreamed of finding the All Blue. This is a legendary place where all the world's seas meet, holding every kind of fish. While stranded, Zeff saved Sanji's life again by giving him all their food. After they were rescued, Sanji stayed with Zeff. He helped build a floating restaurant, the Baratie. Zeff taught him to be a top-notch cook and a kick-based fighting style.

Like Zeff, Sanji will never refuse food to someone who is starving. He only uses his legs to fight, protecting his hands for cooking. He is very kind to women and will never harm one, even if it means he gets hurt. He became known as "Black Leg" Sanji. During a two-year training period, Sanji learned a technique called Sky Walk. This lets him run through the air! Sanji received a special suit from his family that made him invisible. However, he later destroyed it because he feared losing his humanity.

Sanji usually wears a black suit and tie. His hair always covers one of his eyes, and he often smokes a cigarette.

In the anime, Hiroaki Hirata voices Sanji. Eric Vale voices him in the Funimation English version. Taz Skylar plays Sanji in the live-action show.

Tony Tony Chopper: The Doctor

Tony Tony Chopper is an anthropomorphic reindeer and the Straw Hats' doctor. He ate the Human-Human Fruit, a Zoan-type Devil Fruit. This gives him the power to change into a full-sized reindeer or a reindeer-human hybrid. He also developed a drug called Rumble Ball. This allows him to use even more transformations for three minutes. With some help, Chopper can now stay in his transformations for about 30 minutes.

Chopper was rejected by his reindeer herd because of his blue nose and eating the Devil Fruit. He was rescued by Doctor Hiriluk, a kind but quirky doctor from Drum Island. Hiriluk was trying to create cherry blossoms that would bloom in the snow. Chopper was heartbroken when Hiriluk became very ill. After Hiriluk's death, Doctor Kureha took Chopper in as her student. When the Straw Hats arrived, they took Chopper with them. Kureha then used Hiriluk's potion to make cherry blossoms bloom in the snowy sky, fulfilling Hiriluk's dream.

When someone compliments Chopper, he gets flustered. He sometimes yells at them to stop trying to make him happy! A funny running joke is that other characters often mistake him for a Tanuki. He always gets angry and corrects them, saying he's a Tonakai (Japanese for "Reindeer").

Chopper's voice actress is Ikue Ōtani. Brina Palencia voices Chopper in the Funimation English dub.

Nico Robin: The Archaeologist

Nico Robin grew up in Ohara, which had the world's oldest and largest library. She became an archaeologist at just eight years old. She gained the power of the Flower-Flower Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. This allows her to create temporary copies of her body parts, like hands or eyes, on nearby surfaces.

Robin secretly learned how to translate ancient stones called Poneglyphs. These stones are scattered around the world and tell a lost history called the "100-Year Void." The World Government found out about this and sent a battle fleet to stop them. Only Robin escaped the attack that destroyed her home and took the lives of everyone on the island, including her mother.

Called the "Devil Child," Robin was traumatized and had a bounty on her head. She lived on the run, unable to trust anyone. To survive, she worked with different pirates and outlaws. She joined Sir Crocodile's Baroque Works group, using the codename "Ms. All-Sunday." After that group fell apart, she had nowhere to go. She joined the Straw Hat Pirates. She grew to love them so much that she gave herself up to the Government to save them. When the Straw Hats learned why she left, they declared war on the Government to get her back. Robin realized she had finally found people who would never betray her and officially joined the crew. Two years later, Robin improved her Devil Fruit powers. She can now create a full copy of her body.

In the anime, Robin's voice actress is Yuriko Yamaguchi. Stephanie Young voices her in the Funimation English version.

Franky: The Shipwright

Franky's pirate parents abandoned him when he was nine. He changed his name from Cutty Flam to Franky. He was taken in by Tom, a shipwright who built the Pirate King Gol D Roger's ship. Tom also secretly held the plans for a powerful ancient weapon.

Franky's reckless actions led to World Government agents finding out about these plans. While trying to save his master, Franky was badly hurt. He survived by rebuilding parts of his body with scrap metal. This turned him into a cola-powered cyborg with super strength. He became known as "Cyborg" Franky. To achieve his dream of sailing a ship he built around the world, he constructed the Thousand Sunny for the Straw Hat Pirates and joined their crew.

In the anime, his voice actor is Kazuki Yao. Patrick Seitz voices him in the Funimation English version.

Brook: The Musician

Brook, also known as "Humming" Brook, was a pirate even before Roger's time. He was part of the music-themed Rumbar Pirates. He left his pet, a baby whale named Laboon, at Reverse Mountain. He promised to return after sailing around the world. After his captain, "Calico" Yorki, passed away, Brook became the new captain. Later, his entire crew was wiped out. However, he had eaten the Revive-Revive Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. This allowed him to come back to life as a skeleton.

Fifty years later, Brook's main goal is still to keep his crew's promise to Laboon. To do this, he joined the Straw Hat Pirates. He is an amazing musician. He says he can play any instrument, but he is usually seen playing the violin. Brook can even use his music to make people fall asleep. While separated from the other Straw Hats, he became a world-famous musician known as "Soul King" Brook. He filled concert halls with fans. He is also a skilled fencer who uses a shikomizue (a Japanese cane sword) in battle. Because he is so light, he can jump incredibly high and even run across water. Brook later learned how to use his Devil Fruit power to leave his skeleton body. He can explore his surroundings as a disembodied soul.

The idea of a skeleton musician was first thought of by the creator, Oda, in 2000. This was long before Brook first appeared in the story.

He is voiced by Chō. Ian Sinclair voices him in the Funimation English version.

Jimbei: The Helmsman

Jimbei is a whale shark-type fish-man. He is a master of Fish-Man Karate, a fighting style that lets him control water as if it were a solid object. Jimbei can talk to fish, an ability usually seen in merfolk. He can even get help from whale sharks.

Jimbei grew up in a tough part of Fish-Man Island. He first joined the island's royal army, then the Sun Pirates. He became captain after Fisher Tiger passed away. The World Government offered him the title of Warlord and safety for the Sun Pirates. In return, Jimbei disbanded his crew. He later gave up his Warlord title to fight against the Government. This was during their war with the Whitebeard Pirates, who protected Fish-Man Island.

Two years later, he helped the Straw Hat Pirates stop a rebellion on Fish-Man Island. Jimbei then turned down Luffy's invitation to join his crew. He had already promised to help the Big Mom Pirates after Whitebeard's death. After breaking ties with Big Mom, he finally joined the Straw Hat Pirates as the crew's helmsman.

In the Japanese anime, Jimbei is voiced by Daisuke Gōri, and later by Katsuhisa Hōki. Daniel Baugh voices him in the Funimation English version.
