Pacific typhoon season facts for kids

A Pacific typhoon season is a time of year when many powerful storms called typhoons form in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. These storms are like giant spinning weather systems. They bring strong winds and heavy rain.
Typhoon seasons happen in a specific area. This area is north of the equator. It stretches from the 100th meridian east to the 180th meridian, also known as the International Date Line.
Understanding Typhoons
What is a Tropical Cyclone?
A tropical cyclone is a rotating storm system. It forms over warm ocean waters. Depending on where they form, these storms have different names. In the Pacific, they are called typhoons. In the Atlantic, they are called hurricanes.
Different Strengths of Storms
Scientists classify these storms by their strength.
- Tropical depressions are the weakest. They are just starting to form.
- Tropical storms are stronger. They have faster winds and get a name.
- Typhoons are very strong. Their winds are even faster.
- Super typhoons are the most powerful. They have extremely high winds.
How Typhoons Get Their Names
Typhoons are given names to help people track them. Once a storm becomes a tropical storm, it gets a name from a special list. If a typhoon causes a lot of damage or deaths, its name might be "retired." This means that name will not be used again for another storm. This helps remember how serious that storm was.
