List of prehistoric scheduled monuments in Powys (Radnorshire) facts for kids
Powys is the biggest county in Wales! It covers more than a quarter of the country's land. Powys is full of hills and quiet places, with not many people living there, and it doesn't have any coastline. It was formed in 1974 and is made up of three older areas: Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, and most of Brecknockshire.
All across Powys, there are 950 special places called Scheduled monuments. These are important historical sites protected by law. Because there are so many, they are listed in different groups. This article focuses on the prehistoric sites found in Radnorshire.
Radnorshire is in the middle part of Powys. The River Wye separates it from Brecknockshire to the south, and Montgomeryshire is to the north. In Radnorshire, there are 139 prehistoric scheduled monuments. Most of these are from the Bronze Age, which was a time long, long ago when people used bronze tools. These Bronze Age sites are mostly burial places, but there are also 11 stone circles, stone lines, and 17 tall standing stones. There are also 20 Iron Age hillforts, which were like ancient forts or protected areas.

What are Scheduled Monuments?
Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAMs) are very important historical sites that are protected by law. This means it's against the law to dig or disturb them. Think of them like super old treasures that everyone needs to help protect!
The Welsh government's agency, Cadw Welsh Historic Monuments, is in charge of finding and protecting these sites. They work with other groups like RCAHMW and Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust to make sure these ancient places are safe for future generations.

Types of Prehistoric Monuments
- Chambered Tombs: These are ancient burial places, often made of large stones, where people from the Neolithic (New Stone Age) period were buried.
- Round Barrows and Cairns: These are mounds of earth (barrows) or piles of stones (cairns) that were used as burial sites, mostly during the Bronze Age.
- Standing Stones: These are tall, upright stones placed by ancient people, sometimes alone or in lines or circles. We don't always know why they were placed, but they might have been for ceremonies or to mark important places.
- Stone Circles and Alignments: Groups of standing stones arranged in circles or lines. These were likely used for special gatherings or religious events.
- Hillforts and Enclosures: These were large, protected settlements, usually built on hills, during the Iron Age. They had strong walls or ditches to keep people safe.
