List of monastic houses in Wales facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A monastic house is a place where monks or nuns live and pray together. This list tells you about the old abbeys, priories, and friaries, and other religious homes in Wales.

We've included smaller places like 'cells' (tiny monasteries) and 'monastic granges' (farms run by monks, especially if monks lived there). We also included places run by military orders like the Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller. We haven't included hospitals unless they were also a type of abbey or priory at some point.

The locations are based on maps from the Ordnance Survey.

What the List Means

This list helps you understand the different types of monastic houses. Here's what the symbols mean:

These symbols tell you about the site today:
* This place is still used as a monastery today.
+ Some parts of the old monastery are now used as a church, or are part of a church.
^ Some parts of the old monastery are now used for something else, like a house or a business.
$ Only the earthworks (like old foundations or mounds) of the monastery remain.
# There are no clear signs left of the monastery.
~ We don't know the exact spot where the monastery was.

If a name is in italics, it might be a mistake, or a place that was planned but never built.

Who looks after the sites:
