War Memorials in Bromley

There are several war memorials in Bromley:

  • A war memorial at St Luke's churchyard in Bromley Common. It is a cross with a figure of Christ, made around 1920 from Portland stone and bronze.
  • Another memorial cross is at Holy Trinity churchyard, also in Bromley Common. This one was made by Evelyn Hellicar in 1920.
  • The War memorial at St Peter and St Paul's churchyard was created by Sydney March in 1921. It is a column with a sculpture, made of Portland stone.
  • The main Bromley War Memorial is on Martin's Hill. It was also made by Sydney March in 1922, using Portland stone and bronze.

In Crystal Palace Park, you can see amazing statues of prehistoric animals like Anoplotherium, Dicynodon, Hylaeosaurus, Ichthyosaurus, Labyrinthodon, Mantellodon, Megaloceros, Megalosaurus, Megatherium, Mosasaurus, Palaeotherium, Plesiosaurs, Pterodactyl, and Teleosaurus. These were created between 1852 and 1855 by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. They are made from re-constituted stone and are very old examples of dinosaur sculptures.

Also in Crystal Palace Park, there is a bust (a sculpture of someone's head and shoulders) of Joseph Paxton. He was the designer of the Crystal Palace building. This bust was made by William F. Woodington in 1869 from Carrara marble.

Near the Lower Lake in Crystal Palace Park, you'll find a statue of a Gorilla. This sculpture, made in 1961 by David Wynne, represents Guy the Gorilla, a famous gorilla who lived at London Zoo. It is made of Belgian marble.
