List of rivers of Armenia facts for kids
The rivers of Armenia are important waterways. They flow into either the Caspian Sea or Lake Sevan. Long ago, the Assyrians called Armenia "Nairi," which means "Land of the lakes and rivers." This shows how important water has always been to the country.
Armenia has 16 rivers that are longer than 50 kilometers (about 31 miles). The longest river is the Aras. It is even mentioned in the Old Testament as one of the four special rivers of the Garden of Eden. In total, Armenia is home to about 9,480 rivers and small streams.
Armenia's Main Rivers
Rivers make up about 4.7 percent of Armenia's land. The longest river in Armenia is the Aras. It is also known as Araks or Arax. This river forms part of Armenia's border with Iran and a large section of its border with Turkey.
Many other rivers flow into the Aras. These are called its tributaries. Some of the main ones include the Akhuryan, Kasagh, Hrazdan, Azat, Arpa, Vorotan, and Voghji rivers.
In the northwest part of Armenia, you'll find other long rivers. These include the Debed and Aghstafa. Shorter rivers in that area are the Dzoraget and the Pambak.
Most of Armenia's rivers eventually flow into the Caspian Sea. They do this by joining the Araks River or its tributary, the Hrazdan River. The Hrazdan River starts from Lake Sevan. Lake Sevan itself receives water from 29 rivers and streams. Its water basin covers an area of 4,750 square kilometers (about 1,834 square miles).
