List of supermarket chains in the United Kingdom facts for kids
Supermarket chains are groups of shops that sell food and other household items. In the United Kingdom, there are 16 main supermarket chains. For a long time, four big supermarkets were the most popular: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, and Morrisons. They used to sell most of the groceries in the UK.
Tesco is currently the largest supermarket in Great Britain. But, two other chains, Lidl and Aldi, have been growing very quickly. In fact, Aldi recently became the fourth largest grocery seller in Great Britain. This shows how much the supermarket world is changing!
Northern Ireland also has many of these big chains. Tesco is the largest there, too. However, some chains like Aldi and Morrisons do not operate in Northern Ireland. This makes the market a bit different in that part of the UK.
