Why is it Called Lithium?
Lithium got its name because of two special natural springs nearby. One of these springs contained lithium salts. These salts are minerals that gave the town its unique name.
A Look Back: Lithium's History
Lithium was first mapped out as a town in 1882. The first people to settle there were Dr. Henry Clay Fish, Richard P. Dobbs, and James G. Christian. They all moved to Missouri from Illinois.
The town officially became a village in 1883. Richard C. Lisenby was its first mayor. The two mineral springs were very important to the town. People believed the water had healing powers. Because of this, Thomas King built a bath house there in 1883.
Two churches were also started in Lithium. The Lithium Baptist Church began in 1885. The St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church was organized in 1896. By 1912, Lithium had grown to include two general stores, two mills, and a brick yard. At that time, about 98 people lived in the town.
