What's in a Name?
St. Mary has had a few interesting nicknames over time, like "Camp Rowdy" and "Yankeetown." Eventually, the community became known as St. Mary's Landing. Later, people simply called it St. Mary's, and now it's known as St. Mary.
A Look at History
This small city was founded by settlers who came from France. They also built the St. Mary's Catholic Church. The city was first named St. Mary's Landing.
On October 24, 2021, a very strong tornado, called an EF3 tornado, passed through the town. It caused a lot of damage.
Where is St. Mary?
St. Mary is located in an area known as the Grand Champ Bottoms. Saint Laurent Creek borders the community to the south. Saline Creek is to the north.
An offshoot of the Mississippi River separates St. Mary from Kaskaskia Island to the east. The city covers a total area of about 0.61 square miles (1.58 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

- Sonny Siebert was a baseball player. He was a pitcher for six different teams during his Major League Baseball (MLB) career. He was chosen to be an All-Star twice.
