Little Clowns of Happytown was a fun American animated TV show. It aired on ABC every Saturday morning from September 26, 1987, to July 16, 1988.

What's the Show About?

The show is about a group of young clowns from a place called Happytown. Their main goal is to bring joy and good vibes to the nearby city. They want everyone to feel happy and positive!

The main clown friends are:

  • Big Top: The leader of the group.
  • Badum-Bump: Big Top's little brother.
  • Hiccup: Big Top's helper.
  • Tickles: Hiccup's best friend.
  • Pranky: Big Top's best friend.
  • Blooper: Hiccup's big brother.

They also have a pet elephant named Rover and their wise teacher, Mr. Pickleherring. Plus, there are special clown-like animals called Clownimals. Only Badum-Bump can understand what the Clownimals are saying!

But it's not all easy! A grumpy guy named Awful Bebad and his helpers, Geek and Whiner, try to stop the clowns from spreading happiness. Awful Bebad wants the world to be gloomy, just like him.

Meet the Characters

Let's get to know the main characters from Happytown!

The Little Clowns

  • Big Top: He is the main hero and the leader of the Little Clowns. Big Top loves to tell jokes and always wears a cool top hat, like a circus ringmaster.
  • Blooper: This clown is super clumsy! He often gets into funny situations by accident. He's great at physical comedy.
  • Hiccup: She is Blooper's younger sister. Hiccup loves to sing songs, but she often hiccups when she tries to talk.
  • Tickles: She loves to giggle all the time! Tickles is also very clever and can fix almost anything.
  • Pranky: He enjoys playing jokes on people, especially by throwing custard pies. Sometimes, his pranks backfire, and he gets a pie in his own face!
  • Badum-Bump: He is Big Top's younger brother. Badum-Bump doesn't speak words; he only makes funny sounds.
  • Rover: This is Badum-Bump's loyal pet elephant and his best buddy.

The Clownimals

The Clownimals are colorful, clown-like animals who join the Little Clowns on their adventures. There are nine of them, and only Badum-Bump can understand their unique language. The Clownimals include a Lion, a Tiger, a Bear, a Seal, a Penguin, a Giraffe, a Rhino, a Zebra, and a Kangaroo.

The Mentors and Villains

  • Mr. Pickleherring: He is the kids' energetic teacher. Mr. Pickleherring teaches the clowns how to be funny and helps them learn important life lessons.
  • Awful Bebad: He is the main bad guy of the show. Awful Bebad wants the world to be sad and gloomy, just like his name suggests!
  • Geek: He is Awful Bebad's assistant with red hair.
  • Whiner: This is Awful Bebad's other assistant. He's a teenager who complains a lot and often tells Bebad what's happening.

Joking Around With the Clowns

While Little Clowns of Happytown was on TV, ABC also showed short clips called Joking Around With the Little Clowns. These mini-segments aired during commercial breaks of other Saturday morning shows. In these clips, one clown would tell another a joke. Even after the main show ended after one season, these joke segments continued to air on ABC for two more years!
