Little Cockup is a small fell (which is another word for a hill or mountain) found in the beautiful Lake District in Cumbria, England. It's part of the Northern Fells area. This hill stands about 395 metres (1,296 feet) tall. You can find it about 5 kilometres (3 miles) north of a bigger mountain called Skiddaw. Little Cockup is located near a larger fell named Great Cockup, which is about 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) to its east. There's also another hill simply called Cockup, located about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) south.
Discovering Little Cockup
Little Cockup gets its name to help tell it apart from the nearby and larger Great Cockup. The word "Cockup" comes from very old English words. These words describe a quiet, hidden valley and also refer to a bird called the Black Grouse. This tells us a bit about what the area might have been like long ago.
Exploring the Fell
Little Cockup is smaller and lower than Great Cockup, which is 526 metres (1,726 feet) tall. Many people who enjoy hiking use Little Cockup as part of their journey to climb Great Cockup. There isn't a clear path directly up Little Cockup. This means walkers often need to make their way through areas covered in bracken, which is a type of tall fern.
Near the top of Little Cockup, you can find a circular stone ledge. At the very summit, there is a cairn, which is a pile of stones often used as a landmark. Around this cairn, you'll see common heather growing, adding a touch of purple to the landscape. From the top of Little Cockup, you can enjoy views of Great Cockup and the lovely Bassenthwaite Lake.
