Little Heath, Coventry facts for kids
Little Heath is a part of Coventry, a city in the West Midlands region of England. Most of this area is located within the Longford ward of Coventry.
What is Little Heath?
Little Heath is mostly made up of homes, found on streets like Gayer Street, Thomas Lane Street, and Old Church Road. It's also home to the Little Heath Industrial Estate, where businesses operate. The Coventry Canal flows through the area, offering a peaceful waterway.
You can easily walk from Little Heath to the Arena Park Tesco Superstore for shopping. The Foleshill fire station is also nearby. The Royal Hotel, located on Old Church Road by the canal, is the only pub in the area.
Homes and History
Many of the houses in Little Heath are 'terraced properties', which means they are built in rows, sharing walls with their neighbours. Most of these homes were built between 1910 and 1930.
The area has a long history. One of the schools, St Laurence's C of E Primary School, used to be called Foleshill C of E Primary. It got this name because the church it's connected to was historically part of the Foleshill estate. This estate was first mentioned way back in 1086 and was once owned by the famous Lady Godiva!
Schools and Community
Little Heath is home to two primary schools. One is called Little Heath Primary School, named after the area itself. The other is Good Shepherd Roman Catholic (RC) Primary School. These two schools even share a sports field!
For religious communities, there are churches nearby. The Catholic church for Good Shepherd Primary School is St. Elizabeth's RC Church in Edgwick. The Church of England (C of E) church for Little Heath is St Laurence's. This church has a hall that is used by local groups, including the Brownies and Girl Guides.
Local Shops and Canal Access
If you're looking for local shops, Proffitt Avenue has a few. You can find a Chinese takeaway, a beauty salon, a hairdresser, and a newsagent there.
The Coventry Canal is a great feature of Little Heath. You can get onto the canal's towpath from the Old Church Road canal bridge. A towpath is a path alongside a canal, originally used by horses to pull barges. Today, it's a lovely place for walks or bike rides.
