The Little Huron River is a small stream in Michigan, United States. It is about 8.0-mile-long (12.9 km). The river flows entirely within Powell Township in Marquette County, Michigan.
The Little Huron River starts on the slopes of Mount Benison and Superior Mountain. These mountains are part of the Huron Mountains. For about half its length, the river flows southwest, then west. Other small creeks join it along the way. After that, it turns north and flows through flatter land. Finally, it reaches its end at the south shore of Lake Superior. The area of land that drains into the Little Huron River is 15.8 square miles (41 km2).
Understanding the Name: Little Huron River
It can be a bit confusing, but the Little Huron River is not a branch of the nearby Huron River. Even though they are very close at their mouths (less than 1.5 miles (2.4 km) apart), they are separate rivers.
To make it even more confusing, the Huron River itself has tributaries called the Little West Branch and Little East Branch. Also, there's a place called Huron River Point along Lake Superior. This point is actually closer to the Little Huron River's mouth than to the main Huron River.
