Powell Township is a small community located in Marquette County, in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is known for its beautiful natural surroundings. In 2020, about 732 people lived here. This number was a bit lower than the 816 people who lived there in 2010.

Communities in Powell Township
Powell Township includes several smaller communities. Many of these were once busy places related to the lumber industry.
Big Bay
Big Bay is an important community in the township. It has a post office and is a designated place for the census. This means it's a recognized area for counting the population.
Alder
Alder is a small community found on the south side of Lake Independence. It used to be a stop on a train line called the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad. This train line connected Marquette and Big Bay.
Antlers
Antlers was once a lumber camp. It was also a stop on the same train line that went between Marquette and Big Bay. The officials who named it chose "Antlers" because the area was known for its many deer.
Birch
Birch was another lumber camp that had a train station. This settlement grew around a mill owned by the Northern Lumber Company. It also had a general store. A post office operated here for about 15 years, from 1905 to 1920.
Homeier
Homeier was also a lumber camp and a train station. It was located on the spur of the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad that connected Marquette and Big Bay.
Huron Mountain
Huron Mountain was the name of a post office that operated only during the summer months. It was open from 1914 to 1956, and again in 1957–1958. This post office got its name because it was located at the northern edge of the Huron Mountains.
Geography of Powell Township
Powell Township is the northernmost township in Marquette County. It shares a border with Baraga County to the west. To the north and east, it is bordered by the vast Lake Superior.
Natural Features
The Huron Islands are located in Lake Superior to the north of the township. These islands are actually part of Powell Township. A large part of the township's land is covered by the Huron Mountains.

The total area of Powell Township is about 162 square miles (419 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 153.70 square miles (398 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 8.36 square miles (21.65 square kilometers), or about 5.16%, is water.
Population and People
In 2000, there were 724 people living in Powell Township. The population density was about 4.7 people per square mile. Most of the people living in the township were White (about 96%). A smaller number were Native American (about 2%) or Asian (about 0.14%). About 1.66% of the population identified as being of two or more races.

There were 333 households in the township. About 21% of these households had children under 18 living with them. Most households (about 58.6%) were married couples living together.
Age Distribution
The population in the township was spread out across different age groups. About 17.5% of the people were under 18 years old. The largest group, about 34.8%, was between 45 and 64 years old. The median age in the township was 46 years. This means half the people were younger than 46, and half were older.
