A Look Back: History of Little Mountain

People started settling near Little Mountain a long time ago. The very first permanent settler arrived in 1815. Imagine what it was like back then, with lots of untouched nature!

The Resort Days

In the late 1800s, Little Mountain became a popular place for vacations. A special resort was built near the top of the hill. The first hotel there opened in 1831, and over the years, different hotels welcomed visitors. People came to relax and enjoy the fresh air. The last of these hotels was taken down in 1925.

Some very famous people visited the resort at Little Mountain. One was James A. Garfield, who later became a U.S. President. Another was John D. Rockefeller, a very successful businessman who founded Standard Oil. It must have been exciting to see such important figures enjoying the mountain!

For a short time, there was even a small settlement nearby called Joice's Corners. It existed while the resort was popular, providing services for visitors and residents.

Today, most of the land around Little Mountain is owned by the Holden Arboretum. An arboretum is like a botanical garden, but it focuses on trees and plants. The Holden Arboretum offers special tours of Little Mountain, which is great because access to the area is usually restricted. This helps protect the natural beauty and history of the mountain for everyone to enjoy.
