Little Mountain is a special kind of hill called a monadnock. It's the highest point in the central part of South Carolina, known as the Midlands region. This mountain stands 813 feet (about 247 meters) above sea level. You can find it in southeastern Newberry County, about 25 miles away from the city of Columbia.

What is a Monadnock?

A monadnock is a single hill or small mountain that stands out from the flat land around it. Imagine a big rock sticking up in the middle of a field! Little Mountain is made of a type of rock called Carolina slate. It rises about 300 feet (91 meters) higher than the other hills nearby.

History of Little Mountain

Long ago, in the 1800s, this mountain was known by a different name: Ruff's Mountain. Later, a town grew up at the base of the mountain. This town was named Little Mountain, and soon the mountain took on the same name.

Before 1917, Little Mountain was part of Lexington County. But then, it became part of Newberry County.

The Radio Tower

Today, there's a tall radio tower on top of Little Mountain. This tower helps send radio signals to the areas northwest of Columbia. The very top of the tower reaches 1040 feet (317 meters) high!
