Where the Little Trout River Starts and Flows
The Little Trout River begins in the Adirondack Mountains. Its source is a small lake found between Soulia Mountain and Baldy Mountain, inside Adirondack Park.
The River's Source
The very start of the river is about 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles) southwest of Lower Chateauguay Lake. It is also 6.0 kilometers (3.7 miles) south of the border between Canada and the United States. Upper Chateauguay Lake is about 4.4 kilometers (2.7 miles) to the northwest.
How the River Flows
From its source in Adirondack Park, the Little Trout River flows for about 19.7 kilometers (12.2 miles). It travels through different sections:
- For the first 4.9 kilometers (3.0 miles), the river flows west through a deep valley. It then turns north to go around Soulia Mountain, passing through a marshy area.
- Next, it flows northwest for another 4.9 kilometers (3.0 miles). It continues through a deep valley until it reaches the village bridge of Burke.
- The river then travels northwest for 4.1 kilometers (2.5 miles). This part of the river also runs through a deep valley, leading to where Alder Brook joins it.
- Finally, for the last 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles), the river first heads west. It then curves northwest, making a few loops before it reaches its end.
Where the River Ends
The Little Trout River flows into the Trout River. It joins the Trout River on its east bank, about 2.9 kilometers (1.8 miles) south of the Canada border.
From this point, the water continues its journey:
- The Trout River flows for about 30.9 kilometers (19.2 miles) mostly north, then northeast.
- After that, the water enters the Châteauguay River. It flows for about 60.3 kilometers (37.5 miles) along this river.
- Eventually, the water reaches the south shore of Lac Saint-Louis. This lake is near Châteauguay, which is southwest of Montreal.
