Little Whernside: A Hill in the Yorkshire Dales
Where is Little Whernside?
Little Whernside sits right on the edge of two special natural areas. One is the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The other is the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This means the hill is part of a protected and very scenic landscape.
The hill also helps form a "watershed." This is a high point of land that divides two different river systems. On one side, water flows into Coverdale. On the other side, it flows into Nidderdale. The very highest point of Little Whernside is marked by a pile of stones called a cairn. This cairn is just inside the National Park boundary.
Exploring the Hill: Access and Paths
For a long time, Little Whernside was on private land. This meant people couldn't easily visit the top. However, things changed in 1997. A public footpath was created. This path connects the summit of Little Whernside to the summit of Great Whernside.
Later, in 2000, a law called the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 was passed. This law made many areas, including Little Whernside, "open access land." This means people can now explore the hill freely. One common way to start your climb up Little Whernside is from the area near Scar House Reservoir.
