History of Liverpool
The story of Liverpool began in 1827 when a trading post was set up there. A small community started to form by 1834. Two years later, a schoolteacher was hired, showing the town was growing. Liverpool was officially established in 1837.
It became an important place for shipping goods like wool, animal hides, and farm products. These items were sent from Stephen F. Austin's colony using Chocolate Bayou. A person named Commodore Nelson gave the town its name, inspired by the big port city of Liverpool in England.
A post office opened in Liverpool in 1846 but closed in 1867. After the American Civil War, the number of people living in the town started to drop. By 1884, only 20 residents remained. However, the post office reopened in 1879 and stayed open. By 1890, the population had grown to 136 people.
In 1906, the local schools had three teachers and 48 students. By 1914, Liverpool had grown quite a bit, with 400 residents. It even had a hotel and two general stores. The population decreased in the 1920s, and by 1966, there were only about 150 people. By 1988, the population reached 627. This growth was helped by a Monsanto plant opening nearby. In 1990 and 2000, the population was around 400 residents.
