Mall History
Early Days and Opening
Livingston Mall was first planned in the late 1960s. It opened its doors in different stages. The first big department store, Bamberger's, opened in 1971. The rest of the mall, along with other major stores like Sears, M. Epstein, and Hahne & Company, opened in 1972.
Growth and Changes Over Time
The mall became very popular because many people were moving from cities to the suburbs in Northern New Jersey. This meant more shoppers for the mall. At the time, both Bamberger's and Hahne & Co. had huge stores in downtown Newark. Sears also had a store there.
In 1986, the Bamberger's store at the mall changed its name to Macy's. A few years earlier, in 1985, Hahne's became Lord & Taylor. This happened because the company that owned both decided to stop using the Hahne's name. Around this time, the M. Epstein store became an extra section for Macy's. Sears was the only original main store left until it closed in 2020.
The Gap clothing store at Livingston Mall is very old! It opened in 1973 and is the oldest Gap store still open in New Jersey.
Recent Store Closures
On February 6, 2020, it was announced that Sears would be closing. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The store officially closed on April 11, 2020. This happened when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak in New Jersey.
Later that year, on August 20, 2020, it was announced that Lord & Taylor would also be closing. A week later, they decided to close all Lord & Taylor stores nationwide. The Livingston Mall store closed on December 29, 2020. After these closures, Barnes & Noble and Macy's became the only main anchor stores left at the mall.
Community Use of Former Sears Space
On December 4, 2020, local officials announced a special plan for the empty Sears store. It would be used temporarily as a COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Center. This plan was approved, and the center opened on December 29, 2020. It helped provide vaccines to residents from Livingston and several nearby towns.
