History of Llave
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, in 1898, there was a war called the Spanish–American War. After this war, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This agreement was part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S., but it doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government did a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the areas of Llave and Mosquito had a total of 1,069 people living there.
