Lloyd Morrison was a very successful businessman from Wellington, New Zealand. He was an investment banker and an entrepreneur, which means he started and managed many businesses. He was born on 18 September 1957 and passed away on 10 February 2012.
In 1988, Lloyd Morrison started his own company called H.R.L. Morrison & Co. A few years later, in 1994, his company helped create Infratil. Infratil is a company that invests in and manages important things like airports and energy businesses.

Early Life and Education
Lloyd Morrison grew up in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He went to Wanganui Collegiate School. After school, he studied law at the University of Canterbury. He earned a special law degree with honours from there.
A Career in Business
Lloyd Morrison's business journey began in the early 1980s. He worked as an investment analyst, which means he studied companies to see if they were good places to invest money. He worked for Jarden & Co and later became a partner at another company.
In 1985, he became the chairman of OmniCorp. This was a New Zealand investment company based in London. OmniCorp was sold in 1988.
Starting Morrison & Co
In 1988, Lloyd Morrison started his own company, H.R.L. Morrison & Co. At first, they offered many different types of investment advice. In the early 1990s, they decided to focus mainly on infrastructure. Infrastructure means the basic systems and structures that a country needs to work. This includes things like roads, bridges, power plants, and airports.
Morrison & Co became very active in buying and advising on these big projects. They helped with the sale of airports, ports, and energy companies in Australia and New Zealand.
Creating Infratil
In 1994, Lloyd Morrison launched Infratil. This was one of the first companies in the world that allowed people to invest in infrastructure projects. Morrison & Co continued to manage Infratil.
Today, Morrison & Co has offices in many cities, including Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland, and Hong Kong. In 2006, they were chosen by the New Zealand Superannuation Fund to manage a large global infrastructure fund. In 2009, Morrison & Co also started the Public Infrastructure Partnership Fund (PIP Fund). This was New Zealand's first fund focused on investing in public-private partnerships (PPPs). PPPs are projects where the government and private companies work together.
Awards and Recognition
Lloyd Morrison received many awards for his business achievements:
- In 2006, he was named "Business Leader of the Year" by the New Zealand Herald newspaper.
- In 2007, Deloitte/Management magazine named him New Zealand Executive of the Year.
- He was ranked 12th on the New Zealand Listener Power List in 2007, which lists influential people.
- In 2010, he was given the title of Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. This was a special honour for his services to business.
In 2011, a new financial index was launched by NZX (the New Zealand stock exchange). It was named the Morrison Index. This index shows the strength of New Zealand's listed infrastructure companies. NZX named it after Lloyd Morrison to recognise his huge impact on the infrastructure sector in New Zealand and his work in taking New Zealand infrastructure expertise to other countries.
Later in 2011, Lloyd received a lifetime achievement award from Wellington Businesses Gold Awards. He was also named Visionary Leader by Deloitte/Management magazine. This award recognised his forward-thinking ideas and leadership.

Supporting the Arts
He was a big supporter of music and arts in New Zealand. In 1995, he started the HRL Morrison Music Trust. This trust helps New Zealand musicians and composers. It also helps produce and market their music through its record label, Trust Records. He was also a trustee for Chamber Music NZ Foundation and a director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Public Campaigns
Morrison was involved in several important public campaigns:
- In 2003, he started a campaign to change the Flag of New Zealand.
- In 2008, he published a paper called "A Measurable Goal for New Zealand." This paper aimed to find a common goal that all New Zealanders could work towards.

Later Life and Legacy
In early 2009, Lloyd Morrison was diagnosed with leukaemia, a type of cancer. He sadly passed away from the illness on 10 February 2012, at the age of 54, in Seattle. He was survived by his wife and five children. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, spoke at his funeral.
In 2015, Lloyd Morrison was honoured again. He was added to the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame. This is a special recognition for people who have made a huge difference to business in New Zealand.
