Lluís Solé i Sabarís (born May 18, 1908 – died July 14, 1985) was an important Spanish teacher and expert in geography. He spent his life studying the Earth's features and teaching others about them.

Life Story

Early Life and Education

Lluís Solé was born in the town of Gavà, Spain. When he was still young, his family moved to Lleida. In 1926, he met a famous geographer named Pau Vila. This meeting sparked Solé's interest in geography, which is the study of the Earth's surface, its features, and how people live on it.

Three years later, in 1929, Solé finished his studies in Natural Sciences at the University of Barcelona. This gave him a strong foundation for his future work.

Becoming a Geographer

In 1935, Lluís Solé helped start the Catalan Society of Geography. This was a group for people who loved studying geography in the Catalonia region of Spain. He later became the president of this society, leading it from 1972 to 1981.

Solé also traveled to Germany to study paleontology. This is the study of ancient life, like dinosaurs and fossils. He even wrote his main research paper, called a doctorate, about paleontology in 1936.

A Life of Teaching

Lluís Solé dedicated his life to teaching. After the Spanish Civil War, a big conflict in Spain, he became a professor at the University of Granada. He taught about Physical Geography, which focuses on the natural features of the Earth, like mountains, rivers, and climates.

In 1943, he moved back to the University of Barcelona. There, he became the main professor in charge of the Geography department. He helped many students, including Carmina Virgili, who was one of his assistants.

Solé also helped create important research centers. He started the university's part of the Center for Advanced Scientific Research (CSIC). He also founded the Institute of the Pyrenees, which focused on studying the Pyrenees mountains.

In 1981, Lluís Solé received a special award called the Creu de Sant Jordi. This award is given by the government of Catalonia to people who have done great things for the region.

Lluís Solé i Sabarís passed away in 1985 at his home in Capellades. He left behind a legacy of knowledge and a love for geography.
