Lluís Nicolau d'Olwer (born January 20, 1888, in Barcelona, Spain – died December 24, 1961, in Mexico City, Mexico) was an important person from Catalonia. He was a politician, a historian who studied the past, and a writer. He held important jobs, like being the Minister of Economics for Spain in 1931. He also led the Bank of Spain from 1936 to 1938.

Life and Career
Lluís Nicolau d'Olwer was the son of Josep Nicolau, a notary, and Anna d'Olwer, who had Irish family roots. He grew up in Barcelona.
Early Education and Writing
He studied philosophy and literature in Barcelona. Later, he earned a special degree called a doctorate in Madrid. In 1917, he wrote an important book. It was the first detailed study of Catalan literature written in the Catalan language.
In 1918, he joined the philology department at the Institute of Catalan Studies. Philology is the study of language in historical texts. He also became a representative for the Regionalist League in Barcelona. This group worked for the interests of the Catalan region.
Political Roles and Challenges
As a member of the Cultural Committee, he helped start new, modern teaching ideas. In 1922, he helped create a political group called Acció Catalana.
Between 1926 and 1931, he faced difficulties because of the government at the time. This was during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera.
In 1931, he became the Minister of the Economy. This was for the new government of the Second Spanish Republic. He held this job from April to December. In 1933, he was a leader at the London Economic Conference. He also became the governor of the Bank of Spain.
Exile and Later Life
During the Spanish Civil War, Lluís Nicolau d'Olwer had to leave Spain. He went to France to find safety. When Germany took over France during the Second World War, he was arrested by the Gestapo. The Gestapo was the secret police force of Nazi Germany. Luckily, he managed to escape.
He then traveled to Mexico. There, he served as a minister without a specific department in the Republican Government in Exile. This government was made up of Spanish leaders who had left Spain.
After the war ended, he continued to live in Mexico. He became a member of the College of Mexico. This is an important academic institution. He kept writing books about European and Latin American history until he passed away in 1961.
