The Central Plaza and Its Church
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, towns often have a central area called a pueblo. This area usually includes a main square (or plaza), the city hall, and a Catholic church. Many towns also hold yearly patron saint festivals in this central plaza.
The central plaza is a lively spot for both official events and fun activities. It's a place where people can meet up and hang out from morning until night. Old Spanish laws, called the Laws of the Indies, said that plazas should be big enough for celebrations. These laws also suggested that nearby streets should have covered walkways to protect people from the sun and rain.
Right across from the central plaza in Loíza barrio-pueblo, you'll find the Parroquia Espíritu Santo y San Patricio, which is a Roman Catholic church.
A Look at Loíza's History
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory of the U.S. In 1899, the U.S. government took a census (a count of the population) in Puerto Rico. At that time, the population of Loíza barrio-pueblo was 833 people.
