The Lobb House is a historic home located at 203 West Onota Street in Munising, Michigan. It is also known as the Lobb-Madigan House. This special house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it's recognized as an important part of history.

The Story of the Lobb House

Who Were the Lobbs?

The Lobb family was very important in Munising. Edward and Elizabeth Lobb owned successful businesses. They had the Princeton Mine in Marquette County. They also owned the Anna River Brick Company, which started in 1887. Because of their businesses, the Lobbs were a leading family in Munising in the late 1800s.

Building the House

Edward Lobb passed away around 1892. But Elizabeth Lobb was very capable. She continued to run the brickyard with her son, Nathaniel. Between 1905 and 1906, Elizabeth decided to build a grand new home. The house was designed by an architect named Edward DeMar from Sault Ste. Marie.

New Owners Over Time

The Lobb family lived in the house for many years. In 1945, they sold it to John and Francis Madigan. That's why it's sometimes called the Lobb-Madigan House! Later, in 1973, the Madigans sold the house. It was bought by the Alger County Historical Society. They planned to use it as a museum.

What Does the Lobb House Look Like?

The Lobb House is a large building with two and a half stories. It measures about 42 feet by 28 feet. The outside walls are covered with clapboard, which are long, thin boards.

Roof and Porch Details

The roof of the house is a hipped roof. This means all sides slope downwards to the walls. It also has hipped dormers, which are windows that stick out from the roof. The edges of the roof, called eaves, extend far out from the house. A lovely veranda (a covered porch) wraps around two sides of the house. It has beautiful Ionic columns that look like ancient Greek pillars.

Inside the House

If you step inside the Lobb House, you would see a lot of beautiful oak woodwork. This shows how much care and detail went into building this historic home.
