Lobitos (pronounced Loh-BEE-tohs) is a small, quiet place in California. It is located in San Mateo County, not far from the coast. You can find it just east of Highway 1, south of the town of Half Moon Bay. It is also near a historic "ghost town" called Purissima. Lobitos sits about 165 feet (50 meters) above the ocean.

What's in a Name?
The name Lobitos comes from the Spanish language. It means "little wolves." This name was actually a nickname for "otters" in Spanish. Before it was called Lobitos, this area was known as "Tunitas."
A Look at Lobitos' Past
Lobitos has a bit of history tied to transportation.
The Ocean Shore Railroad
From 1907 to 1920, a train line called the Ocean Shore Railroad ran nearby. This railroad connected San Francisco all the way down to Tunitas Creek. Even though the train passed close by, it seems there was no official train station in Lobitos itself.
Changes to Highway 1
The main road, Highway 1, used to go right through the middle of Lobitos. Later, the highway was moved. It now runs to the west of the village, following very closely where the old railroad tracks used to be.
Lobitos Today
The part of the old state highway that went through Lobitos is now called Verde Road. There's also a road called the Lobitos Creek Cut-Off. This road connects the village to Tunitas Creek Road, which is another important route between Highway 1 and Highway 35 (also known as Skyline Boulevard).
