Loch A'an is a beautiful freshwater loch (which is the Scottish word for a lake) found deep inside the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. It's also known as Loch Avon. This special loch is the starting point for the River Avon.
Loch A'an stretches from the southwest to the northeast. It is surrounded on three sides by very steep mountains, cliffs, and rocky areas. The northeast side opens up, allowing the river to flow out through a valley called Glen Avon.
Exploring Loch A'an's Location
Loch A'an is nestled among some of the highest mountains in the United Kingdom. To the north, the mighty Cairn Gorm mountain rises almost straight up from the loch. Cairn Gorm is the sixth tallest mountain in the UK.
At the southwest end of the loch, you'll find Ben Macdui. This impressive peak is the second highest mountain in the UK. To the east, another tall mountain called Beinn Mheadhoin stands proudly. It's the tenth highest mountain in the UK and also rises steeply from the loch's basin.
About 1.2 km (0.75 mi) south of Loch A'an, and much higher up, sits another loch called Loch Etchachan. It's located at an elevation of 927 m (3,041 ft).
