Loch Veyatie (in Gaelic: Loch Mheathadaidh) is a large lake located in the northwest of Scotland. It stretches for about 6 kilometers (nearly 4 miles) from the small village of Elphin. This beautiful loch sits between two well-known mountains, Suilven and Cùl Mòr. It can be quite deep, reaching about 30 meters (98 feet) in some places.
Fishing in Loch Veyatie
Loch Veyatie is a very popular spot for fishing. It is well known for its different types of trout, including a special kind called ferox. You can also find charr here, which are another type of fish that live in cold, clear waters.
A salmon hatchery is located at the eastern end of the loch. A hatchery is a place where young fish are raised. Water that flows from this hatchery (called run-off) goes into the loch's main feeder river, the Abhainn Mhòr. This run-off attracts large fish, including charr, which is unusual for them to be in a river.
Where the Water Flows
Loch Veyatie is connected to other bodies of water. At its western end, the loch drains into a slow-moving channel called Uidh Fheàrna. This channel then leads into another loch called Fionn Loch.
From Fionn Loch, the water continues its journey through the River Kirkaig. This river is famous for the amazing 20-meter (66-foot) Falls of Kirkaig. After the falls, the River Kirkaig finally flows into Loch Kirkaig.
A Ship Named After the Loch
Did you know that a warship was named after Loch Veyatie? The Loch-class frigate HMS Loch Veyatie was a type of ship used by the navy. It was named to honor this Scottish loch.
