Lochan na h-Earba is the name given to two beautiful lakes in Highland, Scotland. These lakes are located south of Loch Laggan. They are close to the old border between Lochaber and Badenoch.
Scientists believe these two lakes were once one big lake. Over time, sand and silt (called alluvial deposits) from the Moy Burn built up. This created land that separated the single lake into two smaller ones. Even today, maps often show one name printed across both lakes.
The lakes sit in a narrow valley that runs from southwest to northeast. This valley is parallel to Loch Laggan. The Binnein Shuas hills separate them from Loch Laggan. The highest mountains nearby are Geal Charn and Creag Pitridh. These are known as Munros, which are Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet tall.
The Lochan na h-Earba lakes are part of the Ardverikie Estate. This area is very scenic. Because of its beauty, it has been used for many movies and TV shows. It was often seen in the BBC series Monarch of the Glen. Scenes from Mrs Brown and Outlander were also filmed here.
Both lakes were carefully studied in 1902. This study was part of the Bathymetrical Survey of the Fresh-Water Lochs of Scotland.
The West Lochan na h-Earba
The western lake sits at an elevation of about 351 meters (1,151.7 feet) above sea level. It is about 2.8 kilometers (1.75 miles) long. This lake covers an area of about 106.4 hectares (263 acres). It holds a large amount of water, around 11.5 million cubic meters (408 million cubic feet).
The deepest part of the west lake is about 24.7 meters (81 feet). Its average depth is around 10.8 meters (35.5 feet). Many small streams flow into this lake. The most important streams come down from Beinn a' Chlachair.
The East Lochan na h-Earba
The eastern lake mainly gets its water from the west lake. A short waterway connects the two. The east lake is slightly lower than the west lake. Its elevation is about 348.8 meters (1,142.3 feet) above sea level.
This is the smaller of the two lakes. It is about 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) long. The east lake covers an area of about 59.1 hectares (146 acres). It holds about 5.4 million cubic meters (191 million cubic feet) of water. Its maximum depth is about 21 meters (69 feet). The average depth is around 9.4 meters (31 feet).
