Battle of Locumba
In 1880, Locumba was the site of a battle during the War of the Pacific. This war was fought between Chile and a combined force of Peru and Bolivia. The battle in Locumba was one of many important events during this conflict.
Provisional Capital of Tacna
From 1890 to 1929, Locumba became the temporary capital of the Tacna Department. This happened because the main city of Tacna was under the control of Chile at that time. Locumba served as an important center for the region during this period until Tacna was returned to Peru.
