Lois June Nettleton (born August 16, 1927 – died January 18, 2008) was a talented American actress. She worked in movies, on stage, in radio, and on television. Lois was recognized for her acting with three nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award. She also won two Daytime Emmy Awards, which are special awards for daytime TV shows.

Her Early Life and Beginnings

Lois Nettleton was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on August 16, 1927. Her parents were Virginia and Edward L. Nettleton. She was also raised by her aunt's family. Lois went to Senn High School and later studied drama at the Art Institute of Chicago.

In 1948, Lois was crowned Miss Chicago. She even made it to the semifinals of the Miss America 1948 Pageant. Her acting career officially began in 1949. She started by performing in plays and quickly moved into television. One of her first TV appearances was on the show Studio One in 1949.

On the Radio

Lois Nettleton also acted on the radio. She played the character Patsy in the popular soap opera The Brighter Day.

Starring on Television

Lois Nettleton was a familiar face on television. She appeared in many popular TV shows as a guest star. Some of these shows include The Twilight Zone (in an episode called "The Midnight Sun" from 1961), Hawaii Five-O, Bonanza, and Gunsmoke. She even played Lou Grant's new boss, Barbara Coleman, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973.

Lois also appeared in TV miniseries, which are like long TV movies. She was in Washington: Behind Closed Doors and Centennial. Later, in 1987, she played Penny Vanderhof Sycamore in the TV show version of You Can't Take It with You. She was also a frequent guest on the game show Pyramid.

Emmy Award Wins and Nominations

Lois Nettleton won two Emmy Awards during her career. One award was for her role as Susan B. Anthony in the TV movie The American Woman: Profiles in Courage (1977). Her second Emmy was for an episode called "A Gun for Mandy" (1983) from the show Insight.

She also received several Emmy nominations. These include a nomination for her role in the TV movie Fear on Trial (1975). She was also nominated for her guest role on The Golden Girls in the episode "Isn't It Romantic?". In 1989, she received another Emmy nomination for her recurring role on the series In the Heat of the Night. Her final TV appearance was in the 2006 Christmas movie The Christmas Card.

Performing on Stage

Lois Nettleton was also a talented stage actress. She made her first appearance on Broadway in 1949 in a play called The Biggest Thief in Town. She was highly praised for her performance as Blanche DuBois in a 1973 play called A Streetcar Named Desire.

In 1976, Lois was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in the play They Knew What They Wanted. She continued to act on stage even into her 70s. Her last stage performance was in 2004 in an off-Broadway play.

Voice Acting Roles

In her later years, Lois Nettleton lent her voice to several animated projects for Disney. She voiced characters in shows like Disney's House of Mouse and Herc's Adventures. She also voiced the famous villain Maleficent in Mickey's House of Villains.

Her Personal Life and Passing

Lois Nettleton was married to humorist Jean Shepherd from 1960 to 1967. She never remarried and did not have children.

Lois Nettleton made her last public appearance in August 2007 at a Twilight Zone convention. She passed away five months later, in January 2008, at the age of 80. She died in Woodland Hills, California, due to a brain tumor. Lois Nettleton was buried in Saint Raymond's Cemetery in New York City.
