Website Municipality of Lolol

Lolol is a small Chilean town and commune in the Colchagua Province. It is part of the O'Higgins Region. The name "Lolol" comes from the Mapudungun language. It means "land of crabs and holes."

History of Lolol

During the 1600s, large farms called Haciendas were created in the Colchagua Valley. The King of Spain gave these big pieces of land to his conquistadores (Spanish explorers and soldiers).

After Chile became independent in 1818, many grand houses were built in the Lolol area. Some of these old mansions are still standing today. They are now popular places for tourists to visit.

From the late 1800s to the mid-1900s, two important haciendas, Hacienda Lolol and Hacienda Santa Teresa de Quiahue, helped the local economy grow.

In 2003, the central part of Lolol was named a National Monument of Chile. This was because it has kept its old colonial buildings, culture, and traditions. It is known as a "Typical and Picturesque Zone."

Population and People

According to a census (a count of all the people) taken in 2002, Lolol covers an area of about 597 square kilometers. It had 6,191 people living there at that time.

Out of these, 3,235 were men and 2,956 were women. About one-third of the people (2,118) lived in the town itself. The other two-thirds (4,073) lived in the countryside around Lolol.

Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Lolol grew by a small amount, about 4.2%.

Local Government

Lolol is a commune, which is like a local district in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor.

The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years. The current alcalde for 2021-2024 is José Román Chávez.

Things to See and Do

The most important part of Lolol is its historical center. Here you can find the Church of the Holy Nativity of Our Lady of Mercy. Inside the church, there is a painting by the famous Chilean artist Alberto Valenzuela Llanos. It shows the Virgin of Mercy appearing to King James I of Spain.

Lolol is also known as "Tierra Huasa", which means "Country Land". This is because many traditional Chilean events happen here. These include rodeos, Trilla a yegua suelta (a traditional way of threshing wheat), and Carreras a la Chilena (Chilean horse races).

The local medialuna (rodeo arena) is used for rodeos and other big events because it can hold many people.

Santa Teresa de Quiahue

The Santa Teresa de Quiahue area is located southwest of Lolol. In the past, this large farm mainly grew wheat and wine grapes. It also raised sheep.

A main attraction is the old casa patronal, which means the manor house. It belongs to Tomás Correa Hogg. The house was built tall because the nearby Estero Quichua stream used to flood often.

Hacienda de Lolol

Hacienda Lolol is about 75 kilometers from San Fernando and 25 kilometers from Santa Cruz. This hacienda has lands used for farming and raising animals.

It also has a large reservoir called the "Tranque de Lolol," where people often fish for mackerel. Near the dam, there is a monument dedicated to Saint Isidore the Laborer.

Visitors to Hacienda Lolol can explore the area on horseback. They can also visit the Casas patronales (manor houses) and enjoy traditional Chilean food. These meals are often served with wines from the Colchagua Valley.

Economy of Lolol

In 2018, there were 206 companies registered in Lolol. The main economic activities in the area are related to farming.

This includes growing seeds for cereals, legumes, and oilseeds. Other important activities are harvesting, pruning, and preparing plants.

Culture and Events

Annual Activities

The "Semana Lololina" (Lolol Week) takes place every year in February. This week used to have many special events like a singing festival and acting nights. While some things have changed, it is still a time for celebration.

Every October, there is an Interregional Motorcyclist Meeting. Motorcycle fans from central and southern Chile gather for a ride along the traditional Lolol-Pichilemu route.
