Lomond School is a special kind of school in Helensburgh, Scotland. It's a private school where both boys and girls learn together. Students can attend during the day or live there as boarders. It's the only school like this on the west coast of Scotland.
Lomond School was created in 1977. It was formed when two older schools joined together. These were Larchfield School, which started in 1845, and St Bride's School for Girls, which began in 1895.

School History
Lomond School began when Larchfield School and St Bride's School for Girls merged in 1977. Larchfield School was originally a school for boys. It was known as Larchfield Academy and started in 1845. St Bride's School for Girls opened its doors in 1895.
Larchfield Academy was a preparatory school for boys. It was located on Colquhoun Street in Helensburgh. The school had been around in different forms before 1858. In 1858, James S. Scott bought the old school building and the newly finished Larchfield Academy.
When Lomond School first started, it used both the Larchfield and St Bride's buildings. Sadly, in February 1997, the St Bride's building was destroyed by a fire. A new building was built on the St Bride's site. It was finished in October 1998. The new design included parts of the old building that were not damaged. The Larchfield site was also sold around that time.
What Students Learn
Lomond School mainly follows the Scottish Education System. This is the way schools teach across Scotland. However, older students in their final years (S5 and S6) have another option. They can choose to study one of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. These special programs were introduced in August 2021. The IB programs offer a different way of learning. They help students think broadly and prepare for university.
Lomond School is also a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference. This is a group of leading independent schools.
School Leaders
The current principal of Lomond School is Claire Chisholm. She took on this role in January 2024. Before Mrs. Chisholm, Johanna Urquhart was the principal. Simon Mills was the headmaster before Mrs. Urquhart.
