Lomond School is a private school located in Helensburgh, Scotland. It is a unique school because it welcomes both boys and girls (co-educational). Students can attend as "day pupils," meaning they go home after school, or as "boarding pupils," meaning they live at the school. It is currently the only school of its kind on Scotland's west coast.
The school was created in 1977 when two older schools joined together. These were Larchfield School, which started in 1845, and St Bride's School for Girls, which began in 1895.
Lomond School mainly follows the Scottish Education System. However, older students in their final years (S5 and S6) can choose to study one of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. These special programmes were introduced in August 2021. The school is also a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, a group of leading schools.
The current head of the school is Claire Chisholm. She became the principal in January 2024.

How Lomond School Began
Lomond School was formed in 1977. It happened when two separate schools decided to merge. These schools were Larchfield School and St Bride's School for Girls.
Larchfield School's Early Days
Larchfield School, sometimes called Larchfield Academy, was originally a school for boys. It was located on Colquhoun Street in Helensburgh. The school officially started in 1858, but it had existed in different forms since 1845. In 1858, James S. Scott bought the old school building and a newly built part of Larchfield Academy.
The Merger and New Buildings
When Lomond School first started, it used buildings from both Larchfield and St Bride's. Sadly, in February 1997, the St Bride's building was destroyed by a fire.
A new building was constructed on the St Bride's site. It was finished in October 1998. The new design included some parts of the old building that were not damaged by the fire. An architect who also taught at Lomond, Ian McKellar, helped design the new building. Around the same time, the old Larchfield site was sold.
