History of London, Texas

How London Started

London was founded in the late 1870s or early 1880s. A man named Len L. Lewis helped start the community. He was a horse trader and had been an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Lewis bought some land and planned to build a town with a town square. He hoped London would become the main city for a new county someday. In 1882, a post office was opened, and the area was officially named London.

Population Changes Over Time

London grew steadily after it was founded. By 1896, about 100 people lived there. The population kept increasing, reaching around 360 residents by 1930.

However, the Great Depression in the 1930s caused a small dip in London's population. But by 1943, the number of people living there had grown to 400. After World War II, the community saw fewer people and businesses. The lowest point was in the early 1970s, when only about 110 people lived in London. By the end of the 20th century, the population had risen again to about 180.

London's Historic Landmark
