History of Londonderry Mall
Londonderry Mall first opened its doors on August 15, 1972. It started with 85 stores and services. When it opened, it was the largest two-floor indoor shopping centre in western Canada. Some of the first stores were The Bay (which is still there today) and Woolco. There was even a movie theatre inside! Later, a Safeway grocery store was added.
Growing Bigger Over Time
The mall had its first major expansion in late 1979. It grew even more in the late 1980s. The mall added new sections to the west and then to the south. These new parts included a store called Eatons and the Edmonton Public Library. After these expansions, the mall had grown to 150 stores and services.
In 1990, the mall was renovated again. During this time, a new food court was built in the middle of the mall. In the late 1990s, the Eatons store closed down. After Eatons left, Save-On-Foods moved into its old space on the lower level. Winners took over the upper level of the former Eatons store.
Changes in the 2010s
By late 2013, many big stores and smaller shops moved out or closed. This left many empty spaces in the mall.
In late 2014, the mall announced a big plan to completely renovate and change its stores. Army & Navy and Sport Chek Supercentre moved out to make room for a new Simons store. Winners moved to a different empty space. This move made room for the food court to relocate to the old Winners area. Fabricland stayed in the former Winners space. Dollarama also moved to the new food court area from a nearby spot where Sport Chek used to be. This change made space for a new H&M store.

Mall Renovation Project
In September 2014, Londonderry Mall told everyone about its big renovation plan. This project completely changed how the mall looked. It included brand new entrances, modern lighting, new escalators, and elevators. Many stores and the food court also moved to new locations. MMC Architects and GH+A Design created the new look. The renovation was finished in August 2017.
Phases of Renovation
The demolition part of the renovation was done by mid-2015. This involved removing all the old elevators, escalators, water fountains, and plant beds. The first part of the renovation was completed in June 2016. This phase included moving the food court and updating the main areas of the mall.
The second part of the renovation finished in August 2017. This is when the new Simons store opened to the public. Many smaller local stores from Alberta also opened their doors at this time.
