Lone Star is a small place in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Lone Star is located about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of a bigger city called Lawrence.

History of Lone Star

Early Settlers and the Name

The first people to settle in the Lone Star area arrived in 1854. Many of these early settlers came from the southern states. They believed that slavery should be allowed in the new Kansas Territory. However, by 1860, many of these individuals had either gone back to the south or changed their minds about the cause.

In 1863, a group led by William Quantrill attacked and destroyed much of the nearby city of Lawrence. Some of Quantrill's men rode close to Lone Star during this time.

At first, Lone Star was called "Bond." This name came from the first person who ran the local post office, called a postmaster. The post office served the community from 1875 until 1953.

The name "Lone Star" has an interesting story. According to the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper, a group of settlers were trying to think of a good name for their community's school. They saw a single star in the sky, and that gave them the idea for the name "Lone Star."

Lone Star Lake

Near the community of Lone Star, you'll find Lone Star Lake. This lake was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Civilian Conservation Corps was a program during the Great Depression that put young men to work on important public projects, like building parks and lakes.
