History of Long Island
The first post office in Long Island opened in May 1872. The city itself was officially planned out, or "laid out," in 1873. Later, in 1904, Long Island became an incorporated city. This means it officially became a town with its own local government.

School History
The Almena and Long Island schools joined together, or "consolidated," for the first time in the 1967-1968 school year. Before this, the Almena High School mascot was the Almena Coyotes, with orange and black team colors. In 1966, they were the Almena Huskies, with green and white colors. The Long Island High School mascot was the Long Island Leopards, and their team colors were purple and gold.
