History of Longmore House
Longmore House started as a hospital in 1875. It was built by a group called the Edinburgh Association for Incurables. This group helped people with long-term illnesses.
Building the Hospital
The original hospital was in Salisbury Place. Later, the people in charge decided to build a new, bigger hospital. A man named John Longmore left money in his will to help pay for it.
The new building was designed by an architect named John More Dick Peddie. He used a style called Neoclassical architecture. This style uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings, like grand columns. The new hospital was finished in December 1880.
More parts were added later. A new East Wing opened in 1891. The Duke of York and Princess Mary helped open it. The West Wing was finished in 1899.
Becoming a Royal Hospital
In 1903, the Edinburgh Association for Incurables received a special honor. They were given a royal charter. This is a formal document from the King or Queen. It gives special rights or powers to an organization.
After Liberton Hospital opened in 1906, these two hospitals worked together. They became known as the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Incurables.
Joining the NHS and New Use
The hospital became part of the National Health Service (NHS) in 1948. The NHS provides healthcare for everyone in the UK.
The hospital closed its doors in 1991. Its services moved to the Western General Hospital.
In 1994, Longmore House was changed into offices. It became the home for Historic Scotland. This group looked after Scotland's historic places. In 2015, Historic Scotland joined with another group to form Historic Environment Scotland. Longmore House is now their main office.
