Longue Pointe facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Longue Pointe means "Long Point" in French. It is a special place in northern Quebec, Canada. It's part of the land set aside for the Cree Nation of Chisasibi. This land is called Category I Land, which means it's just for the Cree people to use.

No one lives there all the time, but both the Cree and Inuit people use it. They use it as a safe place for their fishing boats. Longue Pointe is one of the farthest north places you can reach by road in Quebec. It's at the end of a road that branches off the James Bay Road. Only the Trans-Taiga Road goes even farther north.

Exploring Longue Pointe's Location

Longue Pointe is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Chisasibi. It sits right on James Bay. This spot is also on the border between Quebec and the Nunavut Territory.

You can get there by driving on a 48-kilometer (30-mile) gravel road. This road starts from Hydro-Québec's La Grande-1 generating station. That power station is on the Grand River.

From Longue Pointe, you can look out over James Bay. James Bay is about 85 kilometers (53 miles) south of where it meets Hudson Bay. Long ago, around the time the Hudson's Bay Company started, European fur traders often visited this area.
