What Does Pink Honeysuckle Look Like?
Lonicera hispidula has special leaves that grow in pairs on its stems. The top pairs of leaves are joined together around the stem. This makes them look like they are hugging the stem! At the end of the stems, you'll see beautiful pink flowers. After the flowers, the plant grows round, red fruits. These fruits are safe to eat, but they taste quite bitter.
Different Kinds of Pink Honeysuckle
There are two main types, or subspecies, of this plant:
- Lonicera hispidula hispidula
- Lonicera hispidula vacillans
How People Use Pink Honeysuckle
The stems of the Lonicera hispidula plant are hollow and strong. Long ago, the Pomo people used these stems to make smoking pipes.
Today, some special plant nurseries grow Lonicera hispidula. They sell it as an ornamental plant for gardens. It's great for drought-tolerant gardens because it doesn't need much water. It's also used in wildlife gardens and natural landscaping in California. The bright flowers attract hummingbirds, and other birds enjoy eating the red fruits.
