Lonnie White Jr. grew up in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He went to Malvern Preparatory School. There, he was a star athlete. Lonnie played three different sports: baseball, basketball, and football.
High School Sports Achievements
During his second year of high school, Lonnie played baseball very well. He hit for a .283 batting average. He also had six doubles, four home runs, and 25 runs batted in (RBIs) in 33 games.
Lonnie first planned to play college baseball at Clemson University. However, he later decided to play college football instead. He chose to play football at Penn State University. This happened during his junior year. He had other offers from big schools like the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.
In his final year of high school, Lonnie continued to shine in football. He caught 17 passes for 369 yards. He also scored five touchdowns in just four games. His baseball skills were also impressive. He batted .395, hit five home runs, and had 11 doubles. Lonnie also got 25 RBIs, scored 36 runs, and stole 26 bases. Because of his great performance, many thought he would be a top pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft.
Lonnie White Jr.'s Professional Baseball Career
Lonnie White Jr. was chosen in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates picked him as the 64th overall player. This was in a special part of the draft called the Competitive Balance Round B.
He signed a contract with the Pirates. He received a $1.5 million signing bonus. Lonnie started his professional career with the Rookie-level Florida Complex League Pirates. In nine games, he batted .258 and hit two home runs.
