Helping the Lord Lieutenant: Vice and Deputy Lieutenants
The Lord Lieutenant has a team of people who help them with their duties. These helpers are called the Vice Lord Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants.
Vice Lord Lieutenants
The Lord Lieutenant chooses one person to be the Vice Lord Lieutenant. This person helps the Lord Lieutenant directly. When the Lord Lieutenant retires, the Vice Lord Lieutenant's appointment also ends.

Current Deputy Lieutenants
Deputy Lieutenants also help the Lord Lieutenant. There can be many Deputy Lieutenants at one time, depending on how many people live in the county. Their job doesn't end when a new Lord Lieutenant takes over. However, they usually retire when they turn 75. As of February 2023, Berkshire has 35 Deputy Lieutenants, in addition to the Lord Lieutenant and Vice Lord Lieutenant.
