George FitzRoy, Duke of Northumberland (born December 28, 1665 – died June 28, 1716) was an important figure in English history. He was the youngest son of King Charles II of England and Barbara Villiers. George was one of the King's eight children born outside of marriage.
In 1674, when he was just nine years old, George was given the titles of Earl of Northumberland, Baron of Pontefract, and Viscount Falmouth. Later, in 1683, he became the Duke of Northumberland. People described him as a tall man who looked a lot like his father, King Charles II.

Early Life and Royal Connections
George FitzRoy was born in Merton College, Oxford. He grew up with a close connection to the royal family. In 1682, he went on a special secret mission to Venice. This was an early sign of his future roles in public service.
When he returned to England in 1684, he received a very special honor. He was made a Knight of the Garter. This is one of the highest honors a person can receive in England.
A Career in the Military
George FitzRoy had a significant career in the military. In the summer of 1684, he joined the French army as a volunteer. He took part in the Siege of Luxembourg. This was an important battle at the time.
By 1687, Northumberland was in charge of the 2nd Troop of Horse Guards. This showed his growing importance in the army. In 1703, he became the Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Horse. Seven years later, in 1710, he was promoted to Lieutenant-General.
Important Roles in Government
Beyond his military service, George FitzRoy also held many important government positions. In 1688, he became a lord of the King's bedchamber. This was a trusted position close to the King.
He continued to take on more responsibilities. In 1701, he was made Constable of Windsor Castle. This meant he was in charge of the famous castle. He also served as Lord Lieutenant of Surrey starting in 1710. Two years later, in 1712, he became Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire as well. These roles involved representing the King in those areas.
In 1713, he joined the Privy Council. This group advises the King on important matters. He also became the Chief Butler of England.
Family Life
In March 1686, George FitzRoy married Catherine Wheatley. She was the daughter of Robert Wheatley from Bracknell. Catherine was also the widow of Thomas Lucy, a captain in the Royal Horse Guards.
After Catherine passed away in 1714, Northumberland married again. His second wife was Mary Dutton. She was the sister of Captain Mark Dutton.
His Final Years
The Duke of Northumberland lived at Frogmore House in Windsor. He died suddenly at the age of 50 in Epsom on June 28, 1716. He did not have any children who were born within marriage. His second wife, Mary, lived until 1738 and passed away at Frogmore House.
