What is a Lord Lieutenant?

A Lord Lieutenant is the King's or Queen's personal representative in a county. They are usually a retired senior officer from the armed forces or a respected local person. History of the Lord Lieutenancy in Cumbria

The role of Lord Lieutenant for Cumbria began when the county was formed in 1974. Before this, there were separate Lord Lieutenants for Cumberland and Westmorland. When Cumbria was created, these older roles ended. Cumbria also includes parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Recently, on April 1, 2023, the way Cumbria is governed changed. The old county council was replaced by two new local councils. These are called Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness.

Even with these changes, Cumbria still exists as a "ceremonial county." This means it keeps its Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Cumbria. These roles continue to represent the King in the area.
