Lord William Walter Montagu Douglas Scott was an important British person who lived from 1896 to 1958. He was a member of a noble family and also served his country as a soldier and a politician. He was known as a "Lieutenant-Colonel" in the army and received a special award called the Military Cross for his bravery.

Early Life and Education

Lord William was born on January 17, 1896. He was the second son of John Montagu Douglas Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch. A "Duke" is a very high-ranking noble title in Britain.

His sister was Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who was married to a son of King George V. Lord William was also the godfather to Princess Alice's son, Prince William of Gloucester.

For his education, Lord William went to two very famous schools. First, he attended Eton College, which is a well-known boarding school for boys. After that, he went to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a special college where people learn to become officers in the British Army.

Military Service and Awards

After finishing his studies, Lord William joined the army. He became an officer in a cavalry regiment called the 10th Hussars. In 1915, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

During World War I, he showed great courage. In 1918, he was awarded the Military Cross. This is a special medal given to officers for bravery during battle. Soon after, he was promoted again to the rank of captain.

From 1925 to 1926, he worked as an ADC for the Governor-General of Canada. An ADC is like a personal assistant to a very important official. Lord William retired from the army in 1927.

However, when the Second World War began, he rejoined the army to serve his country once more. He fought in Italy and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel.

Political Career

Besides his military service, Lord William also had a career in politics. He was a member of the Unionist Party in Scotland.

In 1935, he became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area called Roxburgh and Selkirk. An MP is a person elected by the public to represent them in the UK Parliament. They help make laws for the country.

He took over this role from his older brother, Walter, after their father passed away. Lord William served as an MP until 1950. In 1945, he also became a Deputy Lieutenant of Roxburghshire, which is a local official role.

Family Life

In 1937, Lord William married Lady Rachel Douglas Home. She was a distant cousin of his. They had one son and four daughters together. The family lived in a place called Eildon Hall, which is located in St Boswells, Roxburghshire.
