Lorenzo Minotti (born on February 8, 1967) is a former Italian professional footballer. He played as a defender, which means he was a player whose main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals.

Lorenzo played for several Italian clubs during his career, including Cesena, Parma, Cagliari, Torino, and Treviso. He is best known for his time at Parma, where he was the team's captain and helped them win many important trophies both in Italy and across Europe.

He also played for the Italian national team eight times between 1994 and 1995. He was part of the Italian squad that reached the final of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, even though he didn't play in the matches.

Early Life and Family

Lorenzo Minotti was born in Cesena, a city in Italy, in 1967. He grew up in a town called San Giorgio. As a young boy, he loved sports and started playing football at a local sports club. He also tried other sports like judo and athletics.

When he was 8 years old, Lorenzo joined the youth team of A.C. Cesena. This was where he began his journey in professional football. Lorenzo is married to Debora, and they have two children. Their son, Alex, also plays football for the youth team of Bologna.

Club Football Career

Lorenzo Minotti began his professional football career in 1985 with his hometown club, A.C. Cesena. He was 18 years old at the time and played for them in Serie B, which is Italy's second-highest football league.

Playing for Parma

In 1987, Lorenzo moved to Parma, where he spent most of his career until 1996. This was a very successful period for him and the club. Under their coach Nevio Scala, Parma won several major titles:

In the 1993 European Cup Winners' Cup Final, which was played at Wembley Stadium, Minotti scored the first goal with a great shot. Parma went on to win the match 3–1. Lorenzo Minotti is remembered as one of the best players in Parma's history and was their captain for many years.

Other Clubs

After his time at Parma, Lorenzo played for Cagliari (1996–1997), Torino (1997–2000), and Treviso (2000–2001). In total, he played 201 matches and scored 19 goals in Serie A, which is Italy's top football league.

International Football Career

Lorenzo Minotti played for the Italy national football team eight times between 1994 and 1995. His first game for Italy was on February 16, 1994, in a match against France.

He was also selected by coach Arrigo Sacchi to be part of Italy's team for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Although he didn't play in any of the games during the tournament, Italy made it all the way to the final.

How He Played

Lorenzo Minotti was a strong and smart left-footed defender. He could play in different defensive positions, like a centre-back (in the middle of the defense) or sometimes a full-back (on the sides). His main role was often as a sweeper, which meant he played behind the main defenders and was good at starting attacks from the back because of his skill with the ball.

He was known for being a fair, hard-working, and intelligent player. He was good at marking opponents (staying close to them to stop them) and timing his tackles. His leadership and ability to understand the game made him a very important player for Parma in the 1990s, leading him to become their captain and play for the Italian national team.

Minotti was also good at heading the ball and joining in attacks, scoring several goals even though he was a defender. He could hit the ball powerfully and accurately, even scoring from volleys and curling free-kicks.

After Playing Football

After he stopped playing football, Lorenzo Minotti continued to work in the sport.

  • From 2002 to 2004, he was the team manager for his old club, Parma.
  • He then became the director of football for A.C. Cesena from 2007 to 2009, and again from 2010 to 2012.
  • In 2015, he worked as a football commentator for Sky Italia, sharing his knowledge about games.
  • Later in 2015, he became the head of the technical section at Parma after the club faced financial difficulties.
