Loris is a city located in Horry County, South Carolina, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,449 people lived there.

Loris History

Loris started as a railroad town on December 7, 1887. It was built to serve the Wilmington, Chadbourn, and Conway Railroad. The town officially became a town on July 26, 1902.

The first brick building in Loris opened in 1907. It was the Bank of Loris. Telephone lines connected Loris to Conway in 1909. The town grew quite a bit in the 1920s and 1930s. A high school opened in 1920. By the 1930s, around 1,000 people lived in Loris. In the 1970s, Loris was officially named a city.

Loris Geography

Loris is located in the northern part of Horry County. It is on the Atlantic coastal plain, which is a flat area near the ocean.

Major roads in Loris include U.S. Route 701. There is also SC Highway 9 Business, which is known as Main Street.

Loris is known for its yearly event called the Loris Bog-off. This festival happens on the third weekend in October in downtown Loris.

The Loris Bog-off

The main dish at the festival is Chicken bog. This is a special dish made with chicken, rice, sausage, and spices. It started in the Pee Dee area of South Carolina. The Loris Bog-off has fun carnival rides, food stalls, and live music from local performers. There is also a petting zoo. Local schools take part in performances and other fun contests, like duck calling.
